Remote position for a hospital in Texas. Must have inpatient coding experience. Profee experience not considered. Job Summary: The Inpatient Coder will have the following responsibilities. Responsibilities: - Assigns Codes: Under direct supervision: Codes all diagnostic and operative information from the medical record using ICD-9-CM, CPT, HCPCS level 2 coding classification systems - Selects the DRG for each inpatient case - Reviews DRG discrepancies from the fiscal intermediary to ensure the appropriate per case DRG assignment - Verifies and abstracts all medical data from the record to complete a date abstract on hospital encounters - Corrects data as appropriate. Ensures that all data abstracted and/or coded are consistent with guidelines outlined by JCAHO, OSHPD and CMS, regional and local policy - Licensure/Certification/Registration Preferred: - RHIT, RHIA, CCS or CPC required Experience: - Must be familiar with ICD-9-CM and CPT coding principles as well as Medicare and Medicaid regulations regarding coding - Requires two years of experience in ICD-9-CM and CPT inpatient coding for hospital services. A test of coding proficiency will be administered - Medicare coding experience preferred Education/ Training Preferred: - Associate Degree in HIT or equivalent experience Skills & Abilities Required: - Organizational and follow-through skills for general office - Knowledge and ability to interpret and apply ICD-9-CM and CPT coding guidelines and general knowledge and use of Microsoft office - Position requires fluency in English language to function in job environment appropriately - Good positive, customer focused interpersonal and business telephone skills - Strong communication skills - Keyboard data entry skills and working knowledge of computers and basic office equipment - Intermediate level of experience with computers in Windows and Microsoft Office applications - Strong grasp of medical terminology - Must be able to work in a fast paced environment and adapt to rapidly changing situations - Must be able to quickly evaluate and prioritize requests of staff and physicians - Must be well versed in HIPAA laws and keep patient documentation and information confidential - Ability to multi-task constantly and tolerate interruptions
